The ToupTek Astro-G 290C colour camera is primarily useful as a guide camera thanks to its high sensitivity (QE>81%), but it can also be used for planetary imaging and video capture.
Featuring a 2.07-megapixel Sony IMX290 sensor, this camera delivers exceptionally clean, low-noise images even at shorter exposure times thanks to its extremely low read noise. For even better results, we recommend choosing one of ToupTek’s higher frame rate models.
The small 2.9 μm pixel size ensures excellent capture of fine detail, while the 12-bit output enables the recording of 4096 rich tonal levels. The camera features a built-in UV/IR-cut filter, so there is no need to purchase these separately.
It is also suitable for imaging fainter deep-sky objects—planetary nebulae, compact galaxies—and double stars. If required, 1.25" filters can be used with the C-mount/1.25" adapter included in the standard package. Thanks to its standard C-mount connection, the camera can also be used directly with optional C-mount lenses, and even as a microscope camera with a suitable adapter.
The ToupTek Astro-G 290C colour camera features a USB 2.0 connection and can record video at 18 frames per second at its maximum resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.
A wide range of free image capture software is available online. For Windows, we particularly recommend SharpCap and FireCapture, although the camera also works very well with the manufacturer's own ToupSky software. The popular PHD2 software also supports the camera, while the ASCOM driver provides even broader compatibility. The camera can be used with Windows, Linux and Macintosh operating systems.
