The ZWO ASI 174 MM monochrome cameras are optimized for high-quality planetary imaging, but they are also surprisingly well suited for deep-sky astrophotography. Their large 1936x1216-pixel sensor, 12-bit output and exceptionally high frame rate immediately stand out. With suitable software, they can also be used as a guide camera.
The small pixel size ensures the capture of fine details, while the 12-bit output allows 4096 tonal levels to be recorded (in contrast, most cameras offer 8-bit output, meaning they can capture “only” 256 tonal levels per colour channel). The large sensor is also advantageous for Solar and Lunar imaging. The built-in ST-4 autoguider port makes these devices well suited for use as guide cameras.
The package includes a UV/IR blocking filter, which filters out unfocused UV/IR light rays produced by lenses. The camera features a T2 thread, but the included 1.25" adapter allows it to be inserted into any 1.25" focuser. A small but useful feature is that the camera can be mounted directly onto a photographic tripod.
The cameras feature a USB 3.0 connection, but can also be used via USB 2.0 at lower speeds.
Numerous free image capture software applications are available for download online; SharpCap and FireCapture are particularly recommended.
