Azimuthal mechanics, such as the new AZ-5 from SkyWatcher are the first choice of amateur astronomers when maximum portability is the goal. It is also recommended for those looking for a stable and smoothly moving mount for nature observation, where two allen keys can be used to adjust the head to a near-vertical position for added stability. Maximum load capacity is 5 kg.
The mechanical head allows for flexible manual fine movement on both axes using finishing knobs. The head is fitted with a Vixen-compatible prismatic rail and the stand is stainless steel. The stable leg can carry a payload of around 8 kg.
The bottom of the AZ-5 head has a 3/8" thread for attaching to the top of photo tripods. The Star Adventurer tripod is recommended for this purpose.
