Colour filters transmit more light in certain ranges, typically of the same wavelength as their own colour, while blocking complementary colours, thus highlighting lower contrast parts of solar system objects. The Explore Scientific colour filters have a 1.25" thread and guarantee excellent image quality thanks to their high quality glass material and anti-reflective coatings. Their lightweight aluminium alloy mount with standard nut-and-bolt filter threads and good grip ribs are easy to thread into the back of the eyepiece.
In addition to helping you see details of celestial bodies, colour filters absorb some light depending on their hue, so it is important to use a filter that matches the power of the telescope you are using, otherwise the image you see may be too dark and faded.
