Excellent image quality, exceptionally high contrast, and an affordable price – that is perhaps the best way to briefly describe the Baader Classic orthoscopic eyepieces. These accessories are primarily recommended for planetary observation, where a wide field of view is not essential, but high-contrast imaging is indispensable.
Do not be deceived by the simple appearance of Baader Classic orthoscopic eyepieces: their minimalist exterior conceals a precisely ground and polished lens system, offering true “ortho” quality. All air-to-glass surfaces feature Baader’s proprietary HT (High Transmission) anti-reflection coatings for maximum light transmission. Naturally, the lens edges are painted matte black, further reducing internal reflections within the eyepiece.
The recessed volcano-top design makes viewing easier and more comfortable, while the fold-down rubber eyecups prevent stray light from entering the eyepiece. Baader orthos are parfocal with one another, meaning that little or no refocusing is required when changing eyepieces. Unlike most orthoscopic eyepieces, their apparent field of view is not 40–45° but 50°, matching that of popular Plössl eyepieces. The bottom of the 1.25" barrel features a standard filter thread.
Perhaps the only drawback of Baader Classic orthoscopic eyepieces is their rather short eye relief below 10 mm focal length, making them unsuitable for eyeglass wearers.
